The South African Weather Service SAWS has raised a Level 2 warning for destructive waves that could pose significant risks to the Western Cape coastline starting this Thursday and lasting through Friday evening, Cape town Etc reports.

As a cold front approaches the region, residents and visitors are forewarned about the impending danger from south-westerly waves, which are predicted to reach heights between 4.5 to 6.0 meters.

Accompanied by wave periods of 10 to 13 seconds, the coastal areas most likely to be affected include Saldanha Bay to Plettenberg Bay on Thursday afternoon before these treacherous conditions extend as far north as Alexander Bay by Friday.

Adding to the hazardous conditions, gusty winds expected to reach speeds of 40 to 60 km/h will further complicate navigational safety along the southwestern and southern coastlines.

The South African Weather Service has urged the public to heed their advice as the risk of being swept off rocky coastlines remains high. The combination of strong winds and large waves makes it particularly perilous for small vessels, which face an increased risk of capsizing.
