lamola to brief media on south africas g20 presidency

International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola is expected to brief the media this morning on South Africa's role as the current president of the G20.

South Africa assumed the G20 presidency in December 2024, taking over from Brazil. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation DIRCO says Lamola will provide an update on the country's progress so far and preparations for the G20 Leaders Summit scheduled for November 2025.

According to a departmental statement, the minister's briefing will also address the broader context in which South Africa is leading the G20, including ongoing global economic difficulties and geopolitical tensions.

South Africa's presidency comes amid rising global challenges, such as trade tensions between the United States and several countries, including South Africa. The imposition of tariffs by the US has led Pretoria to expand and diversify its trade relationships with other nations.
