Cape Town's Grand Arena played host to more than just thrilling fights this weekend it welcomed a global MMA icon who left with a newfound respect for the city, Cape town Etc reports.
Former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov was in town for the Professional Fighters League's PFL inaugural Africa event, and it didn't take long for Cape Town fans to make an impression. As the lights dimmed and the action inside the cage unfolded, chants of 'Khabib' echoed through the packed venue, sending a wave of energy through the arena.
The Dagestani legend, who was cornering fighters Akhmed Magomedov and Artur Zaynukov, admitted afterwards that he didn't expect such an electrifying reception from South African MMA fans.
'I underestimated Cape Town,' Khabib said candidly. 'This is a very beautiful city, the people are amazing, and the atmosphere tonight was incredible. We would love to come back.'
Zaynukov secured a unanimous decision win over Japan's Takeshi Izumi, with Khabib watching closely from the sidelines and later joining him in the corner. His presence added major star power to the evening, drawing attention from local and international fight fans.
