The Japanese government has outlined plans to implement mandatory private health insurance for all incoming tourists.

According to Skift , the proposed measure is part of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfares crackdown on foreigners who leave without paying their medical bills, and is intended to ensure all travellers are able to cover unexpected medical costs.

Officials said the new immigration and residency rules could eventually tie visa issuance and renewals to proof of insurance.
