The SANParks Honorary Rangers, a volunteer organisation that has played a starring role in the protection of South Africas national parks, is celebrating its 60 th anniversary with a range of commemorative events and fund-raising campaigns.

Since its inception in 1964, SANParks Honorary Rangers has provided strategicassistance to South African National Parks as its official volunteerorganisation. In 1987, membership was formalised into the Association of HonoraryRangers, with 301 founding members.

Today, there are over 2 200 SANParks Honorary Rangers all volunteers based in31 regions and working in all 20 of South Africas national parks. While volunteer duties were initially intended to assist rangers with physical tasks in the parks, the scope has broadened to include fundraising, education, and support for rangers and K9 units.

According to National Chairperson, Paul Colditz: The dedication of our members is born out of a deep love for nature and our natural heritage. They work with a commitment that is inspiring and a privilege to experience. Our partnership with SANParks is excellent and we treasure and protect this relationship with enthusiasm.

Since 2016, an average of just over 285 000 volunteer hours have been contributed by members each year, equating to a total of just over two million hours. During this time, the approximate value of volunteer hours and asset contributions to SANParks is estimated to have exceeded R515 million (26m). The lions share of funds raised have been allocated to conservation, ranger support and anti-poaching initiatives.

Details of the 60 th anniversary activities will be made available on the SANParks Honorary Rangers website and social media pages.

The events and campaigns will give members of the public and businesses the chance to support and actively participate in conservation projects through donations, sponsorships or attendance at events. The celebration will culminate in a week of festivities at the Honorary Rangers National Indaba in the Garden Route National Park between September 9 and 14.
