Residents in Hanover Park suspended services at the municipal rent office on Tuesday after they staged a protest over the eviction of a 75-year-old woman, saying the removal was unlawful and inhumane.
According to Athlone News, the small group led by the South African Civic National Organisation SANCO arrived early and blocked entrances, chanting and singing while handing a memorandum of demands to City officials. Municipal workers closed the office for the day after protesters prevented members of the public from entering.
The protest followed the eviction of June Philander, who residents say is sick and was removed from a senior citizens' housing complex while hospitalised.
