Google has announced a major new initiative to equip African university students with foundational AI skills by providing free access to its most advanced Gemini tools for one year. The program, available to eligible students in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, underscores Google's long-standing commitment to advancing digital learning and innovation across the continent.

Through this offer, students aged 18 and above can sign up for a 12-month Google AI Pro Plan at no cost before December 9, gaining access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, Deep Research, NotebookLM, Veo 3, Nano Banana, and 2TB of cloud storage. These tools are designed to support academic work, creative projects, and research-enabling users to explore AI-driven learning in practical, hands-on ways.

The initiative complements Google's broader education and digital skills efforts in Africa, focusing on enhancing access to AI-powered learning experiences. The newly introduced Guided Learning mode in Gemini acts as an intelligent learning companion, helping students solve problems, prepare for exams, and strengthen critical thinking through interactive guidance rather than one-click answers.
