A business owner in Kokosi, Merafong, west of Joburg, has spent his own money to get a borehole drilled in his yard to help residents get water as their taps have been dry for three weeks.
Yesterday, residents queued with buckets to get water from the borehole after the area had been hit by a water outage after Rand Water imposed a 40 water restriction there. This has resulted in a reduced water supply because the Merafong municipality owes the entity about R1.41bn.
In June, the Johannesburg high court ordered Merafong to submit written representations to Rand Water by the end of July, but the deadline was missed.
