U.S. Rep. Carlos Gimenez sent a letter to his House colleagues launching his bid to chair the House Homeland Security Committee, Politico reported on Wednesday afternoon.

Gimenez sent a letter to his colleagues dated Tuesday that listed his long career in public service, which includes serving as mayor, sheriff, and commissioner in Miami-Dade County and as firefighter, fire chief, and city manager in the city of Miami.

"These roles were not theoretical, they were boots-on-the-ground, real-world experiences," Gimenez wrote, according to the letter obtained by Politico.

President Donald Trump endorsed Gimenez's run for Congress in 2020. After representing Florida's 26th congressional district, he has been representing Florida's 28th congressional district since 2023.

"I have proudly served on the Homeland Security Committee and have spent the past two Congresses as Chairman of the Transportation and Marine Security Subcommittee," Gimenez wrote, according to the letter.
