The Gauteng Agriculture Department today distributed seedlings to 28 local farming cooperatives in Orange Farm south of Johannesburg, in a bid to help fight poverty in the community.
MEC Vuyiswa Ramokgopa says that this is part of governments programme to fight food insecurity in the province.
The fact that 2.5 million people in our province alone are classified as moderately, to severely hungry is an absolutely unacceptable state of affairs. This is why ending hunger, has been from the very beginning of my term, certainly the number one agenda item. Its not just about giving people food parcels and solving todays meal but really looking at how we can build a much more sustainable food economy. A food economy that is a lot more responsive to the actual needs of the people on the ground.
