Gabons Leader Nguema Elected President With 90.35 Of Vote: Minister

Brice Oligui Nguema, who led a coup in Gabon in August 2023, won Saturdays presidential election with 90.35 of votes cast, according to provisional results, the Interior Minister said on Sunday.

Nguema, who overthrew President Ali Bongo, ending his family's half-century rule, was widely favored to win the poll.

The former army general had campaigned across Gabon wearing a baseball cap with the slogan "We Build Together".

He vowed to diversify the country's oil-reliant economy and promote agriculture, industry and tourism in a nation where a third of the population lives in poverty.
