A horrifying discovery at a Klapmuts sewer station has stunned both officials and the local community, after what appears to be the dismembered remains of a human foetus were found by municipal workers over the weekend, Cape town Etc reports.
The gruesome find was made early Saturday morning by two municipal staff members and a security guard carrying out routine duties at the Klapmuts pump station. Moments after the initial discovery, police were called to the scene, where more body parts, believed to be from the same foetus, were recovered.
Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie confirmed that an inquest case has been opened. Forensic experts from SAPS are currently analysing the remains to confirm their origin and possibly establish how long they had been at the site.
'An inquest case has been registered for further investigation,' Pojie stated, adding that the incident occurred around 8:30am on Saturday, 12 July.
The Stellenbosch Municipality has released a statement condemning the incident, calling it both 'senseless' and 'heartbreaking.' Spokesperson Stuart Grobbelaar said the municipality has arranged trauma counselling for the workers involved and urged residents to assist investigators.
