Former uMkhonto weSizwe MK Party Secretary-General Floyd Shivambu has launched a recruitment drive for volunteers to drive consultations on a new political party.
At a media briefing on Thursday 19 June, Shivambu announced that he would embark on nationwide consultations on potentially establishing the party.
This followed his removal as MK Party Secretary-General earlier this month and reports of disciplinary charges against. The party has also excluded him from a list of its newest members of Parliament, despite announcing his redeployment to the National Assembly.
Floyd Shivambu appeals for volunteersIn a video shared on X on Sunday 22 June, Shivambu appealed to supporters to register online as volunteers for his consultative process.
"We want to take this opportunity to convey our most sincere thankfulness and gratitude to the millions of South Africans for the messages of solidarity and support that we received after the press conference on Thursday," he said.
"There has been a lot of people who came to us to say they want to volunteer in the process of asking the people of South Africa whether we should establish a political party, and if we do so, what values should define that particular party and what should be its funding model.
In his X post, Shivambu shared a link to an online form where those who are interested can register as Mayibuye volunteers. He also provided a WhatsApp number as an alternative.
The form requires details such as a volunteers name and surname, province, region, age group, gender, occupation, and contact details.
"It is a process which is aimed at consolidating the voice of unity, the voice of progressive voices here in South Africa in pursuit of progressive change for the benefit of the black majority, and Africans in particular, for the total emancipation of black people, not only in South Africa, but in the entire African continent and African diaspora," he concluded.
Despites starting consultations on potentially forming a new political party, Shivambu maintains he is still an MK Party member and will not resign.
