A devastating week for Cape Town's cycling community has reignited urgent calls for road safety, as a string of deadly incidents involving cyclists has shaken the city to its core.

The most recent tragedy unfolded on the iconic Chapman's Peak Drive over the weekend , where a tour bus struck three cyclists. One rider died instantly, another had to be airlifted due to severe injuries, and the third escaped with minor wounds.

Hout Bay police have opened a culpable homicide case, with Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk confirming that the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are appealing to the public for any leads, urging them to contact Crime Stop or use the MySAPS app.

This horrific crash followed closely on the heels of other cycling-related fatalities. Just days prior, veteran cyclist Dennis Hammar passed away in hospital after being attacked while riding through the Cape Town CBD. The 76-year-old was reportedly pushed off his bike and robbed before being hospitalised, where he later died. No arrests have been made in that case either, though a memorial ride was held in his honour.

Another cyclist, aged 35, was killed on Main Road in Claremont on Friday. According to reports, the man swerved to avoid a car door that suddenly opened into his path and was flung off his bicycle, landing directly in front of an oncoming taxi. He died on the scene. Claremont police have also registered a culpable homicide case.
