In the first ODI between the sides in Cairns, Bavuma led the side to a 98-run victory as both he and Markram scored half-centuries, as did Matthew Breetzke. Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj starred in the second innings with career-best figures of 5-33 he went to the top of the ICC ODI rankings on the back of that performance.
One hour ahead of the scheduled start of the second ODI in Mackay, Cricket South Africa announced that Bavuma would miss the game as a precautionary measure: ODI captain Temba Bavuma has been rested for the second match against Australia. This decision is part of his workload management, as he recovered from a hamstring strain which he sustained during the WTC Final in June.
