Former Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro says he has achieved his dream of coaching a soccer club the size of Egyptian giants Al-Ahly.
The club announced him as their new head coach on Thursday 29 May on a two-year deal.
His arrival at the reigning Egyptian Premier League champions came two weeks after he left the Buccaneers, where he had notable success.
Jose Riveiro on joining Al-Ahly"I'm in a European club. You don't lack anything. This is what I dreamt of and hoped for, to coach a team the size of Al Ahly," Riveiro told Al Ahly TV , per Egyptian publication Yallakora .
The Spanish tactician, 47, replaces Marcel Koller, who got the boot after The Red Devils exited the CAF Champions League.
Mamelodi Sundowns narrowly edged them out in the semifinals, ending their two-season reign as African champions.
Domestically, however, Al-Ahly have won a third successive title. Riveiros immediate task is to guide them to their first ever FIFA Club World Cup title when the 2025 edition kicks off in the USA in June.
The Red Devils have participated nine times in the worlds premier club competition, with their best finish being third in 2006, 2020, 2021 and 2023. They are in Group A with Portugals FC Porto, Brazils Palmeiras of Brazil and the US Inter Miami.
Riveiro had a successful three-year stint at Pirates after joining them in June 2022. He guided them to multiple trophies, starting with the 2022 MTN 8 League Cup and 2022/2023 Nedbank Cup.
The Spaniard also became the first coach to win the MTN 8 three times in a row in 2024. The Bucs defended the Nedbank Cup in the 2023/2024 season after beating Masandawana in the final.
