Ethiopia has launched its National Digital Payment Strategy NDPS 2026-2030 alongside a new Instant Payment System, aiming to advance a cash-lite, inclusive digital economy. The strategy sets a five-year roadmap to improve interoperability, trust, and innovation in digital finance.
Millions of Ethiopians now access digital financial services, supported by platforms like the National Digital ID Fayda, e-Gov Service, and MESOB. The country processes over 18.5 trillion Birr in transactions annually, with utility payments and other services increasingly digital.
The initiative seeks to address gaps in access, particularly in rural areas and among women, while promoting cross-sector collaboration, consumer protection, and innovation. The NDPS 2030 and Instant Payment System mark a major milestone in Ethiopia's ongoing digital transformation.
