Eff Welcomes Finance Committee Meeting Cancellation
The Economic Freedom Fighters EFF says it welcomes the cancellation of a meeting of Parliaments Standing Committee on Finance , following the partys letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Thoko Didiza.
The partys spokesperson, Sinawo Thambo, says a meeting, that was scheduled for the processing of the Rates bill in the absence of a Fiscal Framework and Revenue Bill would have been illegal and unconstitutional.
It follows an out-of-court settlement - made an order of the Western Cape High Court - that suspends the VAT adjustment and sets aside the Fiscal Framework resolutions.
The Standing Committee on Finance was due to discuss the Rates bill tomorrow, but the EFF called on both Didiza and the Chairperson of the Committee, Joe Maswanganyi, to refrain from having the meeting in light of the court order.
Thambo explains, We reiterate that parliament must be a custodian of the law and not an instrument of political expediency. The cancellation of the meeting is a necessary and welcome step toward restoring constitutional compliance and upholding the rule of law within Parliament. EFF cautions its a small step in larger battle to protect the integrity and credibility of parliament.
