KuGompo City is now the official name for the city formerly known as East London, after Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie approved 21 geographical name changes in late January, reports Cape town Etc .
The decision follows recommendations from the South African Geographical Names Council and will be published in the Government Gazette before objections can be lodged, the council told Daily Dispatch .
Local historians and the man who proposed the change traced KuGompo to the sound of waves at Cove Rock and described the renaming as a restoration of indigenous place-names. People should understand that before colonialism, all these places had names, Bonisile Grey told reporters.
