Dubai has announced plans to build the worlds largest airport. With a capacity of 260 million annual passengers, Al Maktoum International Airport will take over operations from Dubai International Airport.

Dubais Prime Minister and Vice-President Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum made the announcement on X, formerly Twitter. He said the construction of the US$35 billion (R655 billion) project had been approved and construction would begin immediately.

Al Maktoum International Airport will be five times bigger than Dubai International Airport, with 400 aircraft gates and five parallel runways. Based in Dubai South, an airport city housing one million people will also be built around the new aviation hub.

The airport will be the new hub for Emirates and FlyDubai.

Al Maktoum International Airport will ensure that Dubai continues to lead the global aviation sector for decades to come, confirmed Emirates on social media.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum added: We are building a new project for future generations, ensuring continuous and stable development for our children and their children in turn. Dubai will be the worlds airport, its port, its urban hub, and its new global centre.
