day 2 smith revives england after bumrah burst

India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah took three quick wickets in a devastating spell before England battled back to 353 for seven at lunch on the second day of the third test at Lord's on Friday.

Joe Root's unbeaten 99 checked India's progress on Thursday's opening day of the third test against England at Lord's.

Bumrah dismissed Ben Stokes for 44, Joe Root for 104 and Chris Woakes first ball to leave England in trouble at 271 for seven.

But Jamie Smith, dropped on five, shared an unbroken 82-run partnership with Brydon Carse to revive England in another gripping session of old-style test cricket on a slow pitch.

Root, 99 not out overnight, completed his century off the first ball of the day, flashing hard at Bumrah and leaping in the air as it flew past gully to the third man boundary.

The right-hander raised his bat as he received a standing ovation from the crowd, his 37th test hundred another masterful display from England's highest test run scorer of all time.
