The contentious 'Kill the Boer, kill the farmer' chant, frequently sung by Economic Freedom Fighters EFF leader Julius Malema and his supporters, continues to fuel division and heated debate in South Africa, Cape town Etc reports.
The chant, which originated as a liberation song during apartheid, has resurfaced in recent years amid rising tensions over land reform and racial reconciliation.
The Democratic Alliance DA has strongly denounced the chant, describing it as inflammatory and harmful to social cohesion. In a statement, the DA argued the chant 'has no place in our society,' regardless of court rulings on its legality.
'The song goes beyond mere words,' the DA said. 'It incites violence, stokes hatred, and deepens divisions within our society.' The party emphasised that farmers, who play a critical role in feeding the nation, are unfairly targeted by such rhetoric. 'This divisive language not only damages local communities but risks South Africa's international reputation.'
The DA also called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to take a firmer stance against the chant. 'Political leaders must foster unity and peace, not deepen social unrest,' the party added.
