Concourt To Rule On Citizenship Act

The Constitutional Court is today set to deliver judgment on whether South Africans should automatically lose their citizenship when they acquire the citizenship of another country.
The case relates to a section of the South African Citizenship Act 88 of 1995, which stipulates that South Africans will lose their citizenship if they voluntarily acquire another nationality, unless they apply for and obtain retention from the Home Affairs Minister.
The Supreme Court of Appeal previously ruled that the section of the Act was unconstitutional.
The Constitutional Courts is today expected to determine whether this ruling should be upheld.
