The KwaZulu-Natal Economic Regulator KZNER says unregulated online gambling is a crime. This follows the latest report by the National Gambling Board, revealing that South Africans have spent R1.5 trillion on gambling during the 2024/25 financial year, a R400 billion increase from the previous year.
KZNER Executive for Transformation and Economic Development Bonga Mngoma says online illegal gambling has seen growth that needs to be curbed.
"Online gambling has seen a real growth, there is illegal online gambling that has been happening, and which has not been curbed and regulated and that is where we are saying there is a real challenge because if its unregulated, it means the public is not being secured in any way. Unregulated online gambling is a crime because somebody is doing something that is not legal and therefore the public is not being protected in that space."
