city of cape town boosts winter support for 10 homeless shelters

The City of Cape Towns Community, Arts and Culture Development CACD Department will provide goods and services valued at R1.2 million to ten NGO shelters this winter to help them cope with the increased services demand, reports Cape town Etc .

According to the City, the R1 million budget for its Winter Readiness Programme will go towards acquiring and distributing essentials like blankets, mattresses, food items, hygiene items and cleaning aids to qualifying shelters.

This is in addition to an allocation of nearly R230 000 that has been made through the Expanded Public Works Programme EPWP to assist shelters with temporary staffing, operational support and administrative tasks over the period.

Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham, addresses guests standing behind key Winter Readiness Programme resources.

Winter places enormous strain on shelters as demand for warm beds and basic care increases, especially during storms. By working with our NGO partners on a comprehensive response, the Citys contribution reduces the pressure on qualifying NGOs, and also increases their capacity to help more people, says Citys MMC for Community Services and Health Councillor Francine Highram.
