The Oasis Neighbourhood Watch in Atlantis became the latest safety group to receive advanced crime-fighting equipment from the City of Cape Town on Tuesday, part of a R4.4 million support package for accredited community patrols this financial year.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith personally handed over body-worn cameras, night vision goggles, LED vehicle lights and traffic control equipment to the 27-member volunteer group, as per the City of Cape Town .

Within hours, 17 patrollers immediately deployed with their new gear to monitor the area.

Sixteen years of growing support

The handover marks the 16th year of the Citys Neighbourhood Watch Support Programme, which has evolved from providing basic reflective vests and torches to now offering:

  • Digital coordination through the Trusted Partner App
  • First Aid training
  • CCTV monitoring opportunities
  • Disaster response integration

This is just how we value the individuals and groups who give up their time to diligently protect and serve their communities , said Alderman Smith, noting that modern tools help volunteers work smarter against crime.
