China Mobile has officially activated the 2Africa East Segment of its submarine cable system, marking a major milestone in enhancing Africa's digital infrastructure. The activation ceremony, held in Nairobi under the theme "Connect. Innovate. Ignite. Empowering Africa's Digital Future Together," also featured the launch of China Mobile's AI Cloud Network Convergence Industry Solution.
The 2Africa project, one of the world's largest subsea fibre-optic cable systems, connects 33 countries across Africa, Europe, and Asia, with a design capacity of up to 180 terabits per second Tbps. This massive infrastructure is expected to significantly improve cross-border connectivity, strengthen Kenya's global digital presence, and enhance strategic international linkages.
The initiative aligns with Kenya's Digital Superhighway and Creative Pillar agenda, which aims to deploy 100,000 kilometers of national fibre optic cable, establish 25,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots, build ICT hubs in every ward, and expand access to online government services.
