A car struck a group of Espanyol supporters outside the RCDE Stadium on Thursday evening, injuring at least 13 people shortly before the highly anticipated La Liga derby against Barcelona. Authorities confirmed that all injuries were minor.
Catalonia's regional police force, the Mossos dEsquadra, arrested the driver and said the incident appeared to be accidental. "The situation is controlled and in no case does it pose a risk to people inside the sports venue," the Mossos stated on social media platform X.
Inside the stadium, an announcement was made shortly after kickoff to reassure spectators that the situation outside was under control and that no serious injuries had been reported.
Emergency medical services later confirmed that 13 individuals had been treated for minor injuries.
The crash occurred just before Barcelona took on their city rivals, in a game where they sealed the La Liga title with a derby win. Despite the concerning incident outside, the match went ahead as planned.
