Cape Town To Ease Rates Burden For Homeowners With New Tariff Measures

Cape Town is set to soften its approach to tariff increases for higher value properties in a bid to provide relief for homeowners facing rising municipal bills, reports Cape town Etc .
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis recently announced plans to extend rates rebates to a broader range of property owners, particularly those in the R2.5 million to R7 million bracket, during a discussion on Cape Talk.
The proposed measures are part of the City's 2025/26 budget, designed to mitigate the financial strain of annual increases on households.
Hill-Lewis underscored the importance of accommodating those who have owned homes long term and now find themselves in a situation where their property values have soared, yet their incomes have not kept pace.
The criticism that I've heard, and which I really wholeheartedly accept, is that not everyone in the R4 million to R7 million property band is wealthy, or cash-flush. You may have bought your home a long time ago you've paid it off, now you have a very valuable home, but you don't have the income to match it, he stated.
