South Africa's long-term energy map is shifting again as government officials detail new nuclear developments, a move positioned as part of the country's plan to stabilise the grid, expand transmission infrastructure and secure future supply.

The update, which was delivered on Sunday, 16 November by Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, outlines a number of steps that will directly impact Cape Town and the wider national grid.

According to , Eskom intends to build 14 000km of new transmission lines in the coming years at a projected cost of R440 billion, infrastructure that Ramokgopa says is critical to unlocking renewable energy and connecting people in remote rural areas.
