Chairperson of Parliaments Portfolio Committee on Police, Ian Cameron, has questioned the decision to place Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya on leave.
He says such action is not in line with South African Police Services disciplinary regulations.
Instead, he suggests Sibiya should have either been suspended or temporarily transferred. This comes after National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola announced Sibiya had been placed on leave pending investigations into claims by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, in which he accuses Sibiya of links to criminal syndicates.
"It really creates significant uncertainty and doubt in terms of this process and the rule of law. Again, I have got no idea on what grounds or according to which regulations this is being done," says Cameron.
Sibiya is alleged to have links to criminal syndicates that have infiltrated the SAPS including controversial tenderpreneur Vusimuzi Cat Matlala.
