The Automobile Association AA has called for reform and transparency in South Africas fuel pricing model.
This after Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced an increase in the General Fuel Levy GFL on Wednesday during the tabling of the 2025 budget.
Petrol levy will increase by 16-cents per litre and diesel will increase by 15-cents per litre, which is expected to come into effect on the 4th of next month.
AA spokesperson Eleanor Mavimbela says the organisation will engage with civil society, labour and the transport sector to identify fair and sustainable revenue models.
We definitely do think that its time for us to try to find other funding models for the taxes that form part of the fuel price. Looking at your General Fuel Levy as well as the Road Accident Fund Levy that forms part of the fuel pricing structure. Another thing is we definitely do think there needs to transparency and a forensic audit done with regards to the revenue generated and how its used with regards to the General Fuel Levy and the Road Accident Fund Levy.
