A remote corner of Namibia became the scene of a tragic wildlife attack after a well-known businessman was mauled to death by a lion while on a luxury safari trip.

The fatal incident unfolded at the exclusive Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp in the Sesfontein Conservancy, where desert lions still roam freely across rugged terrain that borders sand dunes and rocky outcrops, as CBS has reported.

Bernd Kebbel, a 59-year-old entrepreneur and philanthropist, had stepped outside his tent during the early hours of the morning when he was pounced on by a lion lurking nearby. He had been camping alongside his wife and friends, all of whom were left traumatised after witnessing the brutal attack.

According to the Ministry of Environment, the group had been enjoying a peaceful evening under the stars, unaware that danger had crept so close to the campsite. When Kebbel exited his tent to use the toilet, the predator struck. Efforts by others in the group to fend off the animal were ultimately unsuccessful. By the time the lion was scared off, Kebbel had succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities were quick to respond, with Namibian police confirming that a full investigation is underway. Environment Ministry officials have also been deployed to assess the risk in the area and determine the next steps.
