BankservAfricas latest data shows that South African salaries held steady in June, following three months of moderation.
The average nominal take-home pay was R17,310 in June 2025, a marginal decline of just 0.1 from the R17,325 recorded in May. Despite this slight dip, salaries remain significantly higher than the previous year, when the average was R15,514.
However, independent economist Elize Kruger cautions that while salary earners are in a somewhat better position, the broader economic outlook is concerning.
"BankservAfrica take-home pay flattened in the month of June after having moderated for three consecutive months. While salary earners are in a somewhat better space in the first half of 2025, the economic environment has deteriorated in recent months and especially, the levels of uncertainty in the economy has resulted in lower confidence and also in a pause on investment decisions. This will be negative for economic activity in the second-half of the year and theres really a concern that it could have a negative impact on both employment and on earnings potential in the second-half of the year, says Kruger.
