Human rights organisation Black Sash has reiterated its call for universal basic income grant as it celebrates 70 years of activism.

Black Sash, which played a role in the liberation struggle by advocating for social justice and human rights, says in the absence of jobs and resulting poverty, the grant is a necessity.

National Advocacy Manager at Black Sash Hoodah Abrahams Fayker says issues of unemployment, inequality and poverty need to be addressed.

In terms of the work that we need to do, we need to look at obviously how do we address these consistent challenges of unemployment, inequality and poverty. Our work in terms of advocating for a universal basic income and ensuring a social protection for all is at the heart of our work so that we can have a country where everyone lives with dignity and a standard of living that is adequate for all.
