The African National Congress ANC in the Northern Cape has won Ward 1 in Kimberley following yesterdays by-election.
The result gives the party an edge over the opposition in the Sol Plaatje Municipal Council.
However, the ANC does not have the majority to govern the council without as the municipality remains a hung council and is currently being governed through a coalition between it and the Good Party.
Platfontein, which forms part of the ward, gave the ANC the numbers it needed to win.
The by-election comes a councillor of the Patriotic Alliance resigned.
