African National Congress ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri claims the Democratic Alliance DA has reneged on its previous threats to leave the government of national unity GNU.

The two parties have clashed publicly on various policies, including the Expropriation Act, Basic Education Laws Amendment BELA Act and National Health Insurance NHI.

President Cyril Ramaphosa assented to the Expropriation and BELA Bills after the GNU was established, causing major friction with the DA.

ANC on DAs past threats to leave GNU

In an interview with the Sunday World podcast, Bhengu-Motsiri said the DAs threats were not as serious as it made them out to be initially.

"I mean, they threatened to leave if we pass the expropriation legislation, including the BELA, by the way. They call those red lines. I think the red lines are maybe yellow or blue now, she said.

But they threatened, and so we are waiting for them to act on what they promised, which is to leave the GNU. But clearly there's no intention to leave."

The blue party has stayed put despite voting against the budgets fiscal framework in Parliament along with Freedom Front Plus - the only parties in the GNU to vote against it.

On Sunday 11 May, DA leader John Steenhuisen told City Press that it was not in the interest of the partys voters to exit the 10-member coalition.

The ANC and DA have held two meetings so far to discuss the budget. Mahlengi-Bhengu revealed that there are more talks coming soon.

Now we need to have a conversation about the GNU and a whole range of the issues that the ANC will ventilate to and with the DA, she added.
