The African National Congress ANC says President Cyril Ramaphosa acted with courage by placing Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on a leave of absence.
ANC Spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri says the ANC is confident that a thorough probe will follow after KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi alleged that senior police officials, including Mchunu, had links to criminal syndicates and interfered with police operations.
Bhengu-Motsiri says, "We are confident that this will actually get us to the bottom of this. It is not everyones hit wonder. It is supposed to be a process that enables us to establish if we are safe and if the institutions linked to the police are operating above board, upholding the oath of office that these South Africans who are working have taken. You know the oath. So, we think that it is an important and responsible decision. The placing of Minister Mchunu on a leave of absence."
