The result leaves Al Hilal third in Group H with two points , behind Salzburg and Real Madrid both on four, after Madrid's 3-1 win over Pachuca.
The Saudi giants must now beat Pachuca on Friday in Miami. A win, plus a victory for either Madrid or Salzburg, would send them through. If that game ends in a draw, Al Hilal would need to win by at least two goals.
Joao Cancelo and Salem Al Dawsari tested the Salzburg goalkeeper early on, while Yassine Bono kept Al Hilal level with a superb save from Karim Onisiwo.
The second half saw Bono make another key stop before Kalidou Koulibaly cleared off the line.
Al Hilal responded with efforts from Neves, Cancelo, and Malcolm, while Salzburg nearly stole it late through Yorbe Vertessen.
A win against Pachuca is now the only path forward for the Saudi side.
