Continuing their dominance in African football, Al Ahly booked their spot in the 2024 CAF Champions League this weekend while PSL giants Mamelodi Sundowns fell short in their semi-final clash against Tunisian side Esprance Sportive de Tunis.
With Al Ahly and TP Mazembe heading to the Cairo International Stadium with a 0-0 aggregate scoreline, goals by Mohamed Abdelmonem, Wessam Ali and Akram Tawfik saw the Egyptian side emerge victorious in their second-leg semi-final fixture against the Congolese giants.
In turn, the Red Devils became the first side in history to qualify for the CAF Champions League final for the fifth season in succession.
Over in South Africa, ES Tunis recorded a 1-0 win against Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld in their second-leg encounter on Friday night.
While the game was momentarily suspended due to bad weather, Raed Bouchnibas 57th minute effort separated the two sides on the night despite the Brazilians dominance throughout the 90 minutes.
Despite falling short in the CAF Champions League, Masandawana earned their spot at the extended 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. The Tshwane-side qualified via the ranking pathway alongside ES Tunis, while Al Ahly and Wydad AC booked their spot in the tournament as recent winners of the CAF Champions League.
