ActionSA says it will not vote for City of Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero in a no-confidence motion against him scheduled for Wednesday 25 June.
The partys 44 votes contributed to Moreros election in August 2024 , after which it declared that it would work with Moreros African National Congress ANC on an issue-by-issue basis.
In exchange, the ANC supported the election of ActionSAs Nobuhle Mthembu as Council Speaker.
ActionSA dumps Joburg Mayor Dada MoreroThe Democratic Alliance DA , which has 71 seats in the Council , filed motions of no confidence against both Morero and Mthembu in May.
Addressing journalists on Wednesday, ActionSAs National Chairperson Michael Beaumont announced that his party was rejecting Morero as an individual, not the ANC .
We have communicated to the ANC that we will not be voting to defend Dada Morero in todays Council meeting. We have come to this conclusion because, frankly speaking, service delivery in Johannesburg has collapsed, he said.
He cited governance issues, such as Moreros announcement of a bomb squad to fix Johannesburg without consulting other political parties.
We have conveyed to the ANC that the problem is Dada Morero, not the ANC. We are working with the ANC very well in the City of Tshwane, where we are in a coalition, and in Ekurhuleni, where we arent in a coalition, he added.
So, we have been at pains to point out to the ANC that this is not an act of hostility against the party. It is simply the fact that ActionSA cannot vote to defend this mayor.
The Council has a total of 270 seats. To survive the motion, Morero needs to secure a majority of votes cast. In 2024, he was elected with 189 of 249 valid votes cast, winning support from parties like the Economic Freedom Fighters and Patriotic Alliance.
