Softfootball reports that Newcastle United are in advanced talks to sign Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton, with a season-long loan deal on the table that includes an option to buy. Ramsdale, 27, is reportedly eager to leave the Championship club after their relegation, and Newcastle are keen to bring him in as backup to Nick Pope.

Southampton, who paid Arsenal 18 million for Ramsdale just last summer, are pushing for a permanent sale. But according to journalist Fabrizio Romano via his official X account , the Magpies are prepared to pay a hefty loan fee and include a buy clause in the agreement.

He wrote:

The deal comes shortly after Newcastle reached an agreement to sign James Trafford from Burnley, only for Manchester City to exercise a matching rights clause to hijack that transfer . Now, attention has shifted to Ramsdale, who could reunite with his former Bournemouth boss, Eddie Howe, at St. James' Park.

Despite a tough season in 2024/25, conceding 66 goals and keeping just three clean sheets, Ramsdale's experience is valuable. He has made 183 Premier League appearances, and although he's faced three relegations with Bournemouth, Sheffield United, and Southampton, his shot-stopping and distribution are still seen as assets.

Newcastle see Ramsdale as a younger alternative to Martin Dubravka, who turns 37 in January. The Slovakian performed well last season, but the club are looking to refresh the position.

This move would keep Ramsdale in the Premier League and potentially reignite his England ambitions. With Champions League football ahead, Newcastle are quietly reshaping their squad, especially with forward Alexander Isak attracting interest from Liverpool.

Ramsdale's arrival would mark another smart addition as the Magpies look to build depth and challenge on multiple fronts this season.
