The N1 main route between Leeu Gamka and Laingsburg was totally obstructed following a massive collision between a cross-border bus and two trucks in the early hours of Saturday morning, 31 May, reports Cape town Etc .
The Western Cape Department of Mobility confirmed that an articulated truck, a rigid truck and a Malawian-registered bus were involved in the fatal crash.
According to various community newsgroups, the mass casualty incident that occurred 40km outside Laingsburg just after 6am claimed the lives of three individuals, who were declared deceased on the scene, while at least 21 passengers were left with critical injuries and another 28 passengers with minor to moderate injuries.
Authorities confirmed that at least 63 people in total were treated for injuries ranging from minor to critical.
Emergency services arrived swiftly on scene, including an EMS helicopter that landed before 12pm. The road was subsequently closed to facilitate rescue operations and investigations.
