Mr Landers is the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa with effect from 26 May 2014.

Growing up during the apartheid years it was inevitable that Mr Landers like many other students would be strongly affected by the political situation which was an ever-present concern particularly in view of the events of 1976.

Mr Landers was a member of the Labour Party in the Tricameral Parliament was also the chairperson of the Labour Party under the late Allan Hendrickse. In the 1980s he served as Deputy Minister in the National Party Cabinet of then President PW Botha.

Mr Landers was one of several Labour Party members of Parliament to join the African National Congress (ANC) in September 1993 shortly before the April 1994 general election. In 1994 he was elected as an ANC member to the National Assembly. He was chosen as a delegate to the negotiating council that settled the final Constitution and presented it to the Constitutional Court. He has served continuously in Parliament since 1994 and is one of the few remaining 'Class of '94' founding members of the democratic Parliament still serving.

Throughout his time in Parliament he served on various parliamentary committees including the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development National Assembly Rules Committee the Joint Rules Committee and ad hoc committees.

On 25 May 2014 President Jacob Zuma appointed him as one of the two deputy ministers of International Relations and Cooperation along with Ms Nomaindia Mfeketo.
