South Africa has expressed its disappointment with the UN Security Councils adoption of a resolution that says Morocco's autonomy proposal for Western Sahara "could represent the most feasible outcome" to a decades-long conflict.

The resolution expressed the Council's full support for the Secretary General's Personal Envoy in facilitating and conducting negotiations between the parties, which include the Polisario Front.

Eleven voted in favour, with abstentions from Russia, China and Pakistan, while Polisario ally Algeria did not participate as a sign of protest.

Morocco's autonomy plan, first presented in 2007, would establish a legislative, executive, and judicial authority for Western Sahara elected by its residents, while Rabat would control defence, foreign affairs, and religion.
