Kenyan President William Ruto has called on universities across the country to integrate artificial intelligence AI into their teaching, research, and operational frameworks, emphasizing the need for higher education to drive the development of advanced digital skills.
The President made the remarks on Monday, November 17, during the awarding of a charter to Gretsa University in Nairobi. He highlighted the importance of linking academic theory with practical skills to prepare graduates for entrepreneurship, innovation, and active participation in Kenya's industrialization and economic growth.
Ruto praised the Ministry of Education for establishing a national Open, Distance and e-Learning ODeL policy, which provides a structured framework for high-quality online learning across Kenyan universities. He noted that adopting AI and digital tools in higher education aligns with the National AI Strategy launched in May, aimed at equipping young professionals with skills relevant to a rapidly changing job market and strengthening Kenya's role in Africa's digital economy.
